Amateur Radio Service Members of the Canyon Lake Amateur Radio Services (CLARS) consist of licensed amateur radio operators (Hams) and others who have joined together to provide communication in an emergency. They are also members of the Riverside County Radio Amateurs Civil Emergency Service (RACES) involved, which coordinates this activity with surrounding communities. Emergency generators and radio equipment, donated by the HomeOwners Club, are located at the Fire Station. American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) Check out the “Athletes in Action” column in The Friday Flyer for information about Region 820 of this organization, which welcomes Canyon Lake children. Anglers Club The purpose of the Canyon Lake Anglers club is to promote good sportsmanship among fishermen and to assist in the upkeep and improvement of the lake. The Anglers Club is a non-profit corporation, organized in March of 1985 and is the oldest fishing club in Canyon Lake. It is geared for the amateur or the accomplished Angler in a non-competitive environment. The club is active with the POA’s Lake-Marina Committee in a well-planned fish-stocking program and strongly stresses the “catch and release” program. Art Association The Canyon Lake Art Association was formed in 1976 with the primary purpose of promoting appreciation and understanding of the visual arts in the community, encouraging advanced study in the field of art and providing exhibits and programs for local artists. Demonstrations highlight each meeting from September through June. June is the annual reception and exhibit, at which students from local schools are honored with awards for their artwork. Babe Ruth Baseball Check out the “Athletes in Action” column in The Friday Flyer for information about this organization, which welcomes the youth of Canyon Lake. Ballroom Dance Club The formation of the Ballroom Dance Club will help sponsor dances on a regular basis for Canyon Lake residents. Bassmasters The Bassmasters Club is affiliated with the Bass Anglers Sportsmen’s Society (BASS). All members are required to be members of BASS as well as residents of Canyon Lake. The purpose of the club is to promote good sportsmanship among the dedicated and beginning Bass Anglers of Canyon Lake. The group assists the Anglers Club with the annual Kid’s Fishing Derby. Of the 12 tournaments held each year, 10 take place here, one of which is a night tournament. A member-guest tournament is also held each year. The Bassmasters Club strongly stresses “catch and release” so all fish caught in the tournaments are released back into the lake. Bosom Buddies Bosom Buddies is a support group dedicated to breast cancer survivors. Formed to educate women about the disease, the group meets with newly diagnosed women and offers speakers for clubs and organizations. In conjunction with a local health-care facility, Bosom Buddies provides discounted mammograms for women who are uninsured or who cannot afford the test for any reason. Boy Scouts Boy Scout Troop 380, Cub Scout Pack 380 Boy Scout Troop 380 is for boys in the 6th through 12th grades. Learning leadership, camping and character building are some of the aims in Boy Scouts. Boys ages 6 to 10 are invited to join the Cub Scout group, which has a special den for Tiger Cubs (boys in the 1st grade). The Pack is a family oriented group dedicated to helping boys pursue Cub Scouting. Bridge GroupsA mixed couples Duplicate Bridge group meets Tuesday evenings at 6:45 p.m. at the Lodge. A Duplicate Bridge group meets every Thursday at the Lodge. Party Bridge meets every Thursday at 10 a.m. at Blue Bird Hall.Woman’s Club Bridge meets the second Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. at Blue Bird Hall. Canasta A group of Canyon Lake women interested in playing Canasta meets each Monday at the Lodge. The group plays from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Clams The Canyon Lake Association of Men, or “The CLAMS”, was organized in March of 1973 to promote fellowship among the male populace of Canyon Lake. Members work for moral, spiritual and cultural improvements at Canyon Lake and engage in many philanthropic services. The club, by policy, takes no part in any political activity. Sole activities for the membership include taking part in annual events, including the spring golf tournament and dinner, a summer picnic, cocktail party, participation in Canyon Lake Fiesta Day, trips to Las Vegas in the fall, Oktoberfest, and the November steak dinner to mark the last meeting of the year. CLAWSCLAWS invites all women in the community to join them in playing Bunco on the second Wednesday of each month in the downstairs conference room at the Country Club. The dice game is played for big cash jackpots. Games get underway at 7 p.m., although participants are asked to arrive 15 minutes early to pick up their game cards and pay their $10 entry fee. The group benefits a community crisis fund to aid Canyon Lake families in need and requests that participants bring canned and packaged foods to each meeting to donate to Helping Out People in Elsinore (HOPE). Community Theatre and Performing Arts This cultural organization presents its major production, “Moonlight Theater”, at Indian Beach. In addition to plays and musicals, the group presents talent shows, mystery dinner theaters, musical programs and special holiday programs for Christmas and Valentine’s Day. The organization is always looking for new faces of all ages that have never participated in theater before. Also needed are people who can assist in set building or the technical areas of lighting and sound. ChoraleersThe Canyon Lake Choraleers was organized in 1980. It is composed of men and women who enjoy choral singing. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. in the City Multi-purpose Room. The group performs for Canyon Lake events and programs as well as for organizations in nearby communities. Cotillion Margene Ziff started the Canyon Lake Cotillion in June of 1989. It is an organization for boys and girls in the 4th through 8th grades. Ballroom dancing and etiquette, as well as the art of conversation are taught and practiced at dances, normally scheduled the first Friday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Lodge. Refreshments and door prizes conclude each evening. An end of the year dinner dance is planned each December. Dancercize Dancercize is offered each Thursday morning in the City’s Multi-purpose Room. A 9 a.m. session is geared toward beginners, followed by a 9:45 class for those more familiar with the exercises. Students are welcome to attend both sessions. For the more mature woman, the group offers a combination of low-impact aerobics, stretching and simple dances to music. Line dancing has also been added to the weekly agenda. Classes are free of charge and new members are welcome! Extreme Aquatics Extreme Aquatics, a USA competitive swim team, is always looking for aspiring swimmers. Tryouts are held Monday through Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Temescal Canyon High School. Boys and girls ages 4 to 18 are invited to try out. Swimmers train three to six days a week at Elsinore High or Temescal High. Equestrian Club The Equestrian Club was formed in 1970 as a non-profit organization to provide amenities for local equestrian enthusiasts. Horse shows, potlucks, and trial rides are just a few of the many activities the club sponsors each year. The club works closely with the Equestrian Committee, the trainer, and the manager to make the facility an attractive and functional amenity for the residents of the community. Fire Company 60 Volunteer Fire Company 60, and it’s squad, was formed here in May of 1978 to care to the community in time of need. The facility is equipped with specialized equipment, such as the Jaws of Life, and water rescue equipment used to assist the Emergency Preparedness program and to meet the needs of an expanding population. The requirement to take part in active volunteer work consists of earning Firefighter I classification, which includes First Aid and CPR training. Each month it is mandatory to train a minimum of six hours, and commit to 48 hours of station coverage, in addition to spending time in the station and maintaining equipment. Friends of the LibraryFriends of the Library was formed in 1982 to provide organized support to the new library, which had recently been designated by the County of Riverside as a Book Station. Two years prior to this, the Woman’s Club agreed to maintain this arrangement until a non-profit status could be established, and volunteers could be gathered. This status was achieved in 1985, when Riverside City and it’s county library accepted the Canyon Lake facility as a branch library. Garden Club The Canyon Lake Garden Club is an informal group comprised of members who like to gather with other gardeners in the community to discuss the trials and tribulations-as well as the joys-of gardening. The group also organizes field trips to other Southern California Gardens. Girl Scouts Girl Scouting is away for girls to learn more about life, people, places and their own well being. They go camping in the outdoors, learn to cook, dance, do arts and crafts, go skating, and much more! Canyon Lake’s Girl Scouts are within the Canyon Stars Service Unit. Scouting levels here include:Daisies Age 5-6 (Kindergarten) Brownies Age 6-9 (Grades 1-3) Juniors Age 9-13 (Grades 4-6) Cadets Age 12-15 (Junior High) Seniors Age 15-18 (High School) Home Owners Club The Home Owners Club, one of the largest clubs in Canyon Lake, was formed in March of 1972 to benefit every property owner in the community. The club was meant to promote and protect the best interests of Canyon Lake homeowners and property owners by encouraging actions, which would make the community a more desirable place to live. The Home Owners Club also takes part in the beautification of the community, the development of parks, and the upgrading of common areas. Horseshoe GroupThe Horseshoe Group was established in 1986 to provide a center for improvement and competition for all levels of horseshoe enthusiasts. A number of medals, both gold and silver, have been awarded to members of the group by the Senior Olympics. Jr. Women’s Club The Junior Women’s Club is open to women with an interest to “Build a Better Community”, with emphasis on youth. The group aims to provide whatever is needed to keep the community’s youth involved in healthy, fun-filled activities. Fundraisers, for the youth of the community, are the club’s main focus. They sponsor the Halloween Carnival, the Holiday Boutique, Casino Night and other community events. Philanthropic services provide scholarships and financial support for those in need in the community throughout the year. The club also contributes to disaster preparedness committees in the community and local schools. Lion Club After over 25 years, the Canyon Lake Lions Club is one of over 40,000 Lions Clubs with 1,600,000 members in 171 countries around the world. The international organization is best known for its work with people who are sight or hearing impaired, though in recent years, has added concern for the victims of diabetes and drug and alcohol abuse. Annual fundraisers contribute towards the Lions Club community help. Member dues cover the expenses of club operations so that 100% of funds collected from the public are used for charitable purposes. Lioness ClubThe purpose of this club is to give women the opportunity to fulfill the needs in their community. Their activities and services are on going throughout the year, helping shelters for battered women, preparing Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets for families in need, and supporting charities such as Lions Hope for AIDS, City of Hope, Camp Wilderness for the Blind, Guide Dogs of the Desert and school Quest programs. Lioness members also work with Lions Clubs in their projects. The club promotes friendship, fellowship and mutual understanding in the community. Little League Boys and girls ages 5 though 16 are invited to join the Canyon Lake Little League. The League’s objective is to teach the children of the community the ideals of good sportsmanship, and respect for authority, so that they may be happy, strong-minded youngsters that will grow to be decent, healthy and trustworthy citizens. Men’s Golf Club The Men’s Golf Club was organized in 1969. The club is affiliated with the Southern California Golf Association (S.C.G.A.) which computes all official handicaps; organizes inter-club team play (in which Canyon Lake participates); and mails its publication, Fore Magazine, to club members. This club offers year-round tournaments, such as the “Men’s Day Tournament” every Wednesday, and the “Early Bird” tournament every Saturday, along with many monthly tournaments including a prestigious member/guest event and the “Gold Cart Stage Day,” which highlights club activities. Men’s Softball Association Canyon Lake men 18 and over, who enjoy playing ball, are invited to join the Men’s Softball Association. The league consists of 8 teams that play on Wednesday nights during spring, summer and fall seasons. All games are played at Gault Field. Merchants’ Association Canyon Lake Merchant’s Association is comprised of property owners in the Canyon Lake Town Center, much in the same way as the Canyon Lake POA is comprised of all the property owners within the gates of Canyon Lake. The purpose of the Merchant’s Association is to maintain the common areas within the commercial area and to provide architectural review and approval of commercial structures and signage. Membership is simultaneous and automatic with property ownership. Assessments are paid on an annual basis, determined by a budget approved at an annual meeting. Mommy and MeMembers enjoy fun-filled times at meetings as their leaders plan events. They present magic shows that demonstrate safety and fire protection skills put on by the police and fire departments, and puppet shows that teach about good manners. Outings typically consist of becoming familiar with places of interest in the surrounding area, such as the Railroad Museum, the Kid Zone Museum, and the Gymboree. There are also holiday parties and social events for moms so they can get to know each other on a more personal level. Dads and grandparents are encouraged to join as well. Panhellenic Alumnae Canyon Lake Panhellenic Alumnae was formed in 1989 to unite the Alumnae of the 26 national sororities affiliated with the National Panhellenic Conference. It encourages high school women graduates, who are planning on attending a four-year University, to seek sorority membership as part of their college life. In the spring of each year the group conducts a seminar at each high school in the area to acquaint the young women with the potential benefits of sorority affiliation during their collegiate years and their subsequent careers. Pinochle Club It was at a fireside gathering on a Roadrunner outing that the idea of a Pinochle club was born. On October 29, 1987, 40 people gathered at the Lodge as the result of an item in The Friday Flyer. They agreed on the organization and rules, and the club was formed. The first game was held on November 12, 1987, with five tables of Pinochle in the Poolside Room. The club has maintained a membership of 32 ever since. Dues are $2 to join and $2 each evening to play. The members take turns as host to make arrangements and provide refreshments. Presidents Council The Presidents Council was established in 1980 to coordinate the interrelated activities of Canyon Lake’s organizations. It is made up of the presidents or their designates of any non-commercial group active in Canyon Lake. The purpose of the council is to coordinate a calendar of meetings and events in order to avoid conflicting or overlapping dates, and also to communicate information about plans and activities. A calendar of activities is kept at the Member Services Counter in the POA Office. Roadrunners In March of 1975, eight couples, which were owners of recreational vehicles, planned a caravan trip to Death Valley. They left on April Fools Day, and parked their vehicles in a circle at Stove Pipe Wells. And as the covered wagons had done many years before, they built a fire in the center of the circle and cooked their meals. In the evening, they sang and told stories around the fire, and so became the Canyon Lake Roadrunners. The group plans a trip of 3-5 days each month, which only takes place on weekdays, and not in the summer so that families have first priority to the campgrounds during the busy camping seasons. Scrappers The Scrappers Club meets at Blue Bird Hall on the first Friday of each month from 6 to 10 p.m. to preserve memories through the creative use of scrapbooks. Sr. Men’s Slo-Pitch Softball The community has two Senior Men’s Slo-Pitch Softball teams that play in an Intercity League, which consists of ten teams representing Sun City, Hemet, Banning and Canyon Lake. The season runs from October until May, with all games played on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at Wheat Field in Menifee from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The minimum age of players is 55.Ski Club The Canyon Lake Ski Club was formed as a non-profit organization in 1968, to help promote the sport of water skiing. Bare footing, Slalom, and Trick have become regular events in club tournaments, which helps support other venues of Canyon Lake. The Ski Club hosts six annual tournaments sanctioned by the American Water Ski Association. Club activities help fund many events that take place in the community, such as sponsoring Polar Bear Day, supplying ski boats and drivers for the Community Participation Day, and in keeping with the non-profit theme, donates excess funds to the development of Canyon Lake. Tale Spinners The Tale Spinners, sponsored by the Canyon Lake Friends of Library, is a writers’ workshop of men and women who meet twice a month to critique one another’s work and offer tips and encouragement in the publishing process. Tennis Club Organized in 1974, the purpose of the Tennis Club was to promote tennis, to meet other tennis players and to improve tennis skills. The Club provides members the opportunity to enter club tournaments. Membership is open to all property owners. Dues are $25 per year per family or $15 for a single membership. All levels of ability are represented and new members are welcome. Tournaments are scheduled each month during the year, which includes doubles, mixed doubles, and team tennis. Thunder Football and CheerCheck out the “Athletes in Action” column in The Friday Flyer for information about this organization, which welcomes the youth of Canyon Lake. Toastmasters Canyon Lake residents who are interested in improving their presentation of giving speeches are invited to join the Toastmasters Club 6900, which meets on Monday evenings at the Kay Ceniceros Center on Newport and Evans Roads in Sun City at 7 p.m. Travel Club The Canyon Lake Travel Club originated in March of 1978. From its inception, its purpose has been to plan, promote and conduct tours for its members for their recreation and enjoyment as a group. Each year, the Board of Directors selects economical trips in response to the desires of the members. Frequent one-day trips are made to various Southern California attractions in comfortable, air-conditioned motor coaches. These range from excursions to the racetrack, musicals, dinner theaters, parks, festivals, etc. Multi-day trips, as well as overseas flights and cruises have proven to be very popular as well. Tuesday Work Group The Tuesday Work Group consists of approximately 25 volunteers dedicated to improving the Canyon Lake Golf Course. These men perform manual labor once a week (minus the hot summer months) and, with their wealth of experience and knowledge, complete projects to beautify and improve the course. Twirlers The Canyon Lake Twirlers Square Dance club is a member of the Cow Counties Hoedown Association, which is the regional governing body of square dancing. Twirlers sponsors “plus level” dances the third and fifth Fridays of each month at the Lodge. Round dancing starts at 7:30 p.m. and square dancing at 8. The club sponsors a beginner’s class each year, which begins in September and graduates in June. There is also a workshop for any square dancer that wishes to brush up on skills. Wakeboard Club Sanctioned in 1998, the Wakeboard Club was formed to organize and regulate wakeboarding in Canyon Lake in a controlled and safe fashion. The group holds “learn to wakeboard” days that offers how-to lessons for beginners, and advanced techniques for the intermediate rider. Boat and wakeboard safety training also is provided, as are tournaments on the second Saturday of each month from February through November. Woman’s Club The Canyon Lake Woman’s Club is a non-profit, non-partisan philanthropic service organization, open to all Canyon Lake women and requests a $10 fee once a year. It was the first organized club in Canyon Lake and is credited with founding the Canyon Lake Library. Social and fund raising activities include a New Member coffee in the fall, a New Member Tea in the spring, a Bridge Marathon, a Fiesta Day booth, Fashion Show, Home Show Tour, Swap Meet and Get Acquainted Party. Women’s Golf ClubThe Canyon Lake Women’s Golf Club is an affiliate with the Women’s Southern California Golf Association, established in November 1971. As such, the group provides handicapping services, inter club team play, as well as golf functions at other WSCGA affiliated clubs all over Southern California. Tuesday play, (Women’s Day), offers specific competitive tournaments each week, as does the Saturday play, (Lady Birds). There is a group called the "9 Holers" that is primarily comprised of beginning golfers. Yacht Club The Canyon Lake Yacht Club was formed in the summer of 1990 for the benefit of all property owners who use the lake-skiers, fishermen and pleasure boaters. This family-oriented club is open to everyone who spends time on the lake, from those who own the smallest inner tube or pedal boat, to those who captain large pontoons or speedy ski boats. The group is the official sponsor of the Parade of Lights. Social events are held throughout the year and include picnics, parties and a progressive dinner by boat that takes place at a series of waterfront homes. |
